Wind Journeys, The - Los viajes del viento

The Wind Journeys - Los viajes del viento - 2009 Colombian film directed by Ciro Guerra. This haunting and thought provoking film was Colombia's official submission to 82nd Academy Award's Foreign Language in 2010. For most of his life, Ignacio Carrillo travelled the villages of northern Colombia, playing traditional songs on his accordion, a legendary instrument said to have once belonged to the devil. He eventually married and settled in a small town, leaving the nomadic life behind. But after the death of his wife (where the film begins), he vows never to play the accursed accordion again, and embarks on one last journey to return the instrument to its rightful owner. One the way, Ignacio is followed by Fermin, a spirited teenager determined to become his apprentice. Together they traverse the vast Colombian terrain, discovering the musical diversity of Caribbean culture. Beautiful cinematography makes this film special. Unrated, there is one brief scene of violence. Stars Marciano Martinez and Yull Nuñez. In Spanish with optional English subtitles, 120 minutes.
