Xavier-Laurent Petit est né en 1956. Après des études de philosophie, il devient instituteur puis directeur d'école, mais reste avant tout un passionné de lecture. Une passion qui le conduit à franchir le pas de l'écriture en 1994, avec deux romans policiers publiés chez Critérion. Il entre à l'École des Loisirs avec "Colorbelle-ébène" qui obtient le prix "Sorcières" en 1996. Suivent d'autres romans pour la jeunesse, le plus souvent ancrés dans l'actualité. Mordu de montagne, il se consacre maintenant à l'écriture et n'imagine pas de laisser passer plus d'un an sans partir au moins une fois loin et haut...
Il y a souvent une histoire vraie à l'origine d'un roman de Xavier-Laurent Petit. Ce dévoreur de journaux a découvert l'existence de Chemokil Chilapong dans un article de Courrier international qui racontait comment cette simple fermière avait pu financer la scolarité de ses enfants grâce à sa victoire au marathon de Nairobi. Il n'en fallait pas plus pour que son imagination s'emballe et nous entraîne dans les foulées de Maswala, la mamantilope d'une petite fille au coeur malade...
