Speak, Read, and Write the Language

Learning a foreign language is no easy task. Most of us either begin at a young age as part of educational curriculum, or later in life for work and travel. The focus is generally on learning to speak the language so that we can more easily communicate with others. However, it is important not to forego learning to read and write in a foreign language; when you can read and write it, you can speak it much better.

Vocabulary and Grammar

Reading and writing are arguably the best ways to improve vocabulary in any language, native or foreign. Once you have established the sounds associated with the language’s alphabet and recognize the letters that accompany them, reading words and being able to understand their pronunciation is a next logical step. Having the ability to read these words leads to forming them into sentences. Writing these sentences then enables you to understand how to communicate better and more fluidly. The combination of verbal and visual understanding leads to a much more comprehensive language education; learning one part helps you learn the other.

Experiences

Being able to speak with another person in the language is certainly a beneficial and enjoyable way to experience the language, the people, and the cultures associated with them. However, there is much to be learned by reading in the language. Even though you can find translations of most things into your native language, there is nothing quite like experiencing something in its original form; most translators would agree that some inherent meanings are missed, even in the best translations. You can read another country’s news, literature, or simply signs on the road and next to the art in the museum. By learning to read and write a language, you have yet another way of thoroughly understanding other cultures. You can also re-read a favorite novel in your target language. Even though you may not understand every word, you already know the general idea of what is taking place, which helps translate the nuance of words you might not know.

Learn a New Language this Summer

Summer is a time of leisure, even for those of us who work seven days per week or more. We lay by the pool in the afternoons and on the weekends, we take vacations and travel, and much more. Summertime brings out our inner child and our desire to have some fun. It’s a perfect chance to take up an enjoyable and useful hobby, like learning a new language.

Learning a new language doesn’t have to be an educational requirement. You don’t have to wait for a work or study-related excuse, such as foreign language hours at university or an overseas business trip. Learning a language can be an entertaining way to exercise your brain, learning something new that interests you, and have another language in your mind for the future, when you may find the opportunity to use it.

Taking the time to learn a language is exercise for your brain and can be as interesting as any of the above, particularly if you’re doing it at your own pace and by choice. When you remove the element of requirement, language becomes both fun and educational. Studies also show that learning a new language is a great way to prevent or delay Alzheimer’s.

Of course, there is always the possibility of using the language you’ve learned, even if you do not see one immediately. You can enjoy new music, films, literature, and other art, and appreciate them more via being able to understand them better. Also, you can take what you’ve learned and use it as an excuse to travel and appreciate the language’s cultures firsthand.

At World of Reading, we have everything you need to fully immerse yourself in learning a new language over the summer. Visit us and stock up on summer reading and more. Enjoy your summer even more with a fascinating, educational, enjoyable hobby that has the potential to open up your world.
