The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie (Le Charme discret de la bourgeoisie) - 1972 film directed by Luis Buñuel. Several bourgeois friends planning to get together for dinner experience a succession of highly unusual occurrences that interfere with their expected dining enjoyment. How can a film be both absurdist and overtly realistic? A combination of zany wit and a teaspoon of class. Take heart though, fair viewers, the French is surprisingly simple, such that anyway with a smattering of knowledge should be able to follow all of the dialogue. The movie is in both French and Spanish with optional English subtitles. Stars Fernando Rey, Paul Frankeur, Delphine Seyrig and Bulle Ogier. The DVD also offers 'El náufrago de la calle de Providencia' (The Castaway on the Street of Providence, 1970) - a 24 minute documentary homage to Buñuel by his longtime friend Arturo Ripstein and Rafael Castanedo. There is also propósito de Buñuel (Speaking of Buñuel, 2000)' new 98-minute documentary on the life and work of Buñuel by Jose Luis López-Linares and Javier Rioyo. Rated PG, 102 minutes.
