Amélie DVD - 2001 film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. The title character (the bashful and impish Audrey Tautou) is a single waitress who decides to help other lonely people fix their lives. Amélie is looking for love, and perhaps for the meaning of life in general. We see her grow up in an original if slightly dysfunctional family. Now a waitress in central Paris, she interacts curiously with her neighbors and customers, as well as a mysterious Photomaton-image collector and one of his even more mysterious photo subjects. Little by little, Amélie realizes that the way to happiness (and yet more subtle humor) requires here to take her own initiative and reach out to others. This film is a love letter to Paris and a love letter to Amélie herself. Jean-Pierre Jeunet (director and co-screenwriter) conjured the film like a dream, as if Amélie is his dream girl and he is trying to save her and bring her to a happy ending. Stars Audrey Tautou, Mathieu Kassovitz and Rufus. Rated R for sexual content. In French, with optional English subtitles.
