Flores de Otro Mundo (Flowers from Another World) - 1999 award-winning Spanish film directed by Iciar Bollaín. A group of vibrant young women from different Central American countries travels by bus to a remote Spanish village overwhelmingly populated by men. With souls of practicality, the women dream of better lives while the men ache with more romantic yearnings. From these very different hopes three relationships are tenuously formed and grow in different ways. A wealthy middle-aged builder and a young Cuban golddigger, a woman grappling with a meddling mother-in-law and her own children and a couple in love have deeply planted roots in different locations. Patricia, a woman from Dominican Republic, needs a home and an economic
security that her illegal status in Madrid does not provide her.
Milady, twenty, born in Havana and dying to travel the world. Marirosi
has a job, a home, and the most complete solitude... just like Alfonso,
Damián and Carmelo, men from the St. Eulalia, a village lacking both
marrying women and future. Stars José Sancho, Luis Tosar, Chete Lera and Elena Irureta. Unrated, 108 minutes, optional English subtitles.
